Is it possible to cover the entire history of cinema in just 1000 words? Lists of any format inevitably lead to questions about what should be included and omitted but La storia del cinema in 1000 parole is a wonderful, thought-provoking book that embraces cinema’s visual joys.

Working backwards, starting with Chomet’s I’illusionista (2010) and concluding with Demeny’s Je Vouse Aime (1891), the book covers the cinematic highlights of each decade with a paragraph of text and film images from virtually every year – a glorious range of movies. Delightful to read (it’s in Italian), flick through, discuss and debate.
