(24/07/08) – Metacafe, a video networking website, has launched a juried online and offline festival that promises to showcase the "best in international creative and contemporary short-form video entertainment". Microcinema will be curating the event. Works must be submitted until 10 September. Winners will be paid cash for their works, with the Grand Jury Prize at US$5,000 and the Online Audience-Choice award at $1,000, among other awards.
The 2nd Annual Gotham Screen Film Festival and Screenplay contest, which takes place in the autumn in New York City, is also inviting applications. Organisers say they are looking for "fresh voices and perspectives from local, national and international filmmakers. The mission of the festival is to create a positive industry and audience exposure for works that would otherwise not easily get seen". The 2008 Screenplay Contest comes new with a $2,500 cash prize for the winning screenplay. Excerpts from selected contest entries will be performed live by professional actors at a staged reading during the festival.
InterFilm Berlin is looking for viral videos for the first competition of its kind in Germany. All entries should be "aiming to communicate either a promotional, political or original message. They cannot be older than two years and should have already been successful at spreading the net, or at least be on the way to doing just that". A jury will select the best virals from all entries submitted, to participate in the online audience election. Films will then be seen and voted for on this site. Parallel to and independent of that selection process, virals will also be under the scrutiny of an expert jury consisting of industry professionals. All films which make it to the online-voting stage will also be presented on the big screen during the interfilm Short Film Festival. The deadline is 19 September 2008.
