A charming love story set over the course of a long, hot summer on a south London council estate, Beautiful Thing is Jonathon Harvey's feelgood play brought successfully to life for the big screen. It follows teenager Jamie experiencing his first flush of youthful love and coming to grips with his sexuality as he falls for the boy next door, Ste(ve). When the two are thrown together after Ste seeks refuge from his violent family, they embark on a difficult journey, stealing tentative glances and eventually kisses. When Jamie's mum follows them one evening to a gay pub and discovers his schoolbooks defiled with insults by classmates, Jamie is forced to open up to her. While the characters and sets retain an air of theatricality about them, the theme of gay love is so sensitively handled by first time director Hettie Macdonald, that the 'issues' melt into the background and Beautiful Thing becomes an exuberant affirmation of love and life. Sit back and enjoy.

This is one of my favorite movies. And I'm not even gay.

This is one of the best films I've ever seen.To some extent I felt identified with many scenes and I especially like the way the couple opens up at the end without caring about what the rest might think.

The director definitely managed to smartly show what some young people go through when having gay relationships. Showing at the same time some jocular scenes, this film is worth seeing for sure.

I saw this film for the first time a few years ago and let me tell you it completely took me by surprise by the real and heart warming truth it delivered. From the beginning i loved Jamie and Ste. They were true and real to their charactors, I truly believed their performance. I saw Get Real not long ago, while i thought that it was very good it some how seemed to lack the real and believable sense of true love between the two players. Not only do you believe that the love between Jamie and Ste is real, its strange how they both really seem to want each other. Man, their kiss in the park sold me, how truly powerful this movie really is. The reason this great movie works is to the credit of Jamie's and Ste's honest and believable love on the screen. The only movie that comes close to this great work of art is Get Real which is a must see movie as well. I think that these two movies are of the best and finist and must see films for any young gay teen out there today. Whether you are gay or straight its a great film to see. A truly great performance.

This is a wonderful movie and encouragement to tackle the "difficult" things in life, be real, honest and don't take anything too seriously. I want to thank the great crew and wishmany people would watch this great film.....

An amazing film which I can really identify with at the moment! It made me want to go and shout out "I'm gay and proud too"! There's something feel good and real about the boys performances and the whole setting of the film.

I cried at the end and during the park scene. But the whole film was just so real and spontaneous!

Thanks to the director and the actors on this film! You've affected many people's lives in positive ways!
