There's no doubt about it. Desperado blows you away. Robert
Rodriguez's follow-up to El Mariarchi pays only the most
token consideration to minor details like plot, character, motivation,
and instead dives head first into a non-stop bloodbath which leaves
you numb in your seat. Antonio Banderas is brooding and magnificent
as the 'Mariarchi With No Name' who sets out to avenge the death
of the woman he loved, shooting out whole bars faster than you
can say 'give me a .44 Magnum in each hand'.
Desperado is a very knowing and funny film, but at times it is
crass an leaves a nasty aftertaste. Says the customer to the bartender:
'Your beer tastes like piss.' 'I know,' he replies. 'We piss in
it.' 'And that's not all,' smirks his loathsome sidekick.
Despite gems like these and its tendency to descend into the glossy
world of a Levi's ad, Desperado keeps you hanging on in there.
It's hip (Quentin Tarantino makes a guest appearance, proving
- not for the first time - that he cannot act), sexy, fast and
furious. Just what you'd expect from a Los Hooligans production.

This is real kick ass action. It provides for a good evening's entertainment. However that's as far as it goes, with the inclusion of salma hayek for the sex appeal - this is a no brainer film indeed. But good fun.

Thanks for giving such a wonderful movie the response it deserves. It's been one of my favourite flicks since I first saw it years ago, and a lot of people just write it off as "just another action movie", so it's nice to see it being appreciated.
However - I'm a big admirer of Mr. Tarantino's work and I'm bloody sick and tired of people continually knocking his acting for reasons I cannot begin to conceive. In this film, he plays a guy who tells a joke. What are you people expecting, Geoffrey Rush in "Shine". For crying out loud. So he hasn't done meaningful character work so far (although I personally still think he was outstanding and spot-on in the underappreciated "From Dusk Till Dawn"), but if people put you in as the token tell-a-joke-and-get-shot character, you can't do much in terms of fleshing out your part.
There's a ton of so-called "talented actors" out there who are constantly praised by critics and who are anything but - and here's a guy who studied the craft for six years, is capable of doing well, and is continually dismissed.
Let's just all admit the truth - we all hate to admit that there may be such a thing as a multitalent who can write, direct, and act. And we got one here. I'm tired of all this resentment.
