The joys of adolescence - discovering sex, drugs and the humiliation of watching your own vomit float around a stranger's toilet - are all painted in vivid detail in Larry Clark's provocative and disturbing Kids. Graduating from still to moving images in a bold and deft fashion, photographer Clark's film debut is a relentless assault on your senses and morals as it follows a group of friends in New York for a day. Hanging out with a bunch a sex-crazed teenagers for 24 hours might not appear to be an exciting proposition, but the cast of unknowns are so naturally charismatic that you do begin to care about their fate which becomes - in this film - a question of life or death. By the end, Jennie (Chloe Sevigny) has discovered that her only sexual encounter has left her HIV-positive, and Clark's observations of her devastation is gentle and moving. His cast of kids fall into their characters with consummate ease - they are funny, repulsive and heart-rending by turn. What's all the more shocking is that you realise that this film is concerned not with just these kids, but all kids.

i think it was a ill ass movie!!!

it shows u all about the youth of the kids in the NY, but all that you see in that movie applys over here too its what real kids do and thats the truth theres sex, drugs, mischief pretty much I think it gives its viewers a better perspective on the youth today but not all kids are like that, but i think it was a cool ass movie

phat phat film with no moments of boardom.just pure entertainment.A complete must for anyone.following two rad kids as they have a phat time is more than satisfyin.Casper's blatently a funny guy but maybe a tad messed up in de hed mon...a classic movie .

scada (mattquesada@hotmail.com) writes:

kids for my opened up the doors of my life and my peers to. im from london in uk and i can tell u we have the same shit over here as the NY kids do over there. This is whay we do, we aint got no money, we poor as shit, so what else is there to do apart from pressing chicks and smoking shit. This maybe shockin to some, but its the truth

Jon (aveology) writes:

I saw this film when I was 19, still in my teens just. It had summed up what I had done in my last six years as a teenager (Except for the HIV bit). I think this film installed sexual morals in me were contraception is concerned. I have only just bought this film as it one of those things that you always want but never get around to. This might be down to the fact that I can still remember every part of the film even though I have only seen it once. I saw this film 7 years ago and I believe it is the best film I have ever seen, I shit you not. This film is a MUST. Brilliant, just brilliant.

malk (Email address withheld) writes:

kids is a film that shows the dangers of not watching over your children. Without guidance they are practically lead to death

paul robins (the_funky_homosapian@hotmail.com) writes:

the character telly is exactly like me i have experienced everything he has i love him and this movie

(Email address withheld) writes:

Absolutly shocking, yet brillant. It centainly opens your eyes, But are kids in America really like that? and what about kids in England? I certainly don't no anyone like that.I am a 17 year old student who happens to be studying this film and may i just say, I can't wait until his next film: Bully comes out!!!

dave (david@hostil.com) writes:

yo that fucking movie is da shit best fuckn movie eva seen shit is dope wen im fucking stoned watch that movie then scare face then slim shady show and its the illest shit best movie i relate to the movie to the charicter casper and i got a best friend whos like telly

barricello (Email address withheld) writes:

it's the most dope ass film i have ever seen becouse it's so realistic for me and all of my peeps

Aiden (Email address withheld) writes:

Kids is like one of the dopest movies...I know a dude that looks and acts just like Telly! I first saw that movie when I was eight years old and it's still one of my favorites.

Emma (Email address withheld) writes:

the most frightening thing to me about this film is the commments that have been left here. people are finding this movie "cool", which worries me slightly as that's not what it is intended to leave you feeling. i thought it was a fantastic, but horrifying, film.

Flik (Flik666t_w@hotmail.com) writes:

Me and most of my mates can relate in some way or other. I think tere should be more films similar to give a better picture of Kids Today. Apart from that I would definatly recommend it.

Phoenix Knight (phoenixknight02@hotmail.com) writes:

Having been sexually active since I was 19 (I'm now 21), I've been with six girls. I had a good sex education both at school and from my parents and until a few weeks ago (prior to watching Kids) I was confident that I understood HIV and the way it is transmitted. But, watching Kids horrified me! I suddenly realised that, like many other people, I have always assumed that the people I have slept with would be clear and that I would always be immune to the dangers. But after watching Kids I'm beginning to realise just how easy and devistating it must be. I've had unprotected sex with a couple of girlfriends and even a one-night-stand. It was never a problem for me before, but now it's something which is bothering me a lot, and not something which I will allow again. Kids is the most powerful and moving film I ever seen. I'm almost a little too scared to buy 'Bully'...

nathan (Email address withheld) writes:

kids is a really eye opening film and iam glad that some of u kids out there are realising that this movie isnt portraying new york kids lifes as cool, but warning u all not to make the same stupid mistakes as casper and telly

Skittle (Email address withheld) writes:

I dont think many people see the true meaning of this film. I knew people like Telly and Casper, and they are not in the bset position in the world right now. I thought this movie was cool in the beginning, yet pointless, but as the movie goes on it becomes a real eye opener. If you don't learn anything from this movie other than how seduce young girls or roll a blunt than you are completely ignorant. I recommend that all young teens see this movie so that they will not make the same mistakes. After you watch it, then practice your blunt rolling skills and get blazed.

Ynstijn (Email address withheld) writes:

THA BOMB

That casper dude is JUST like ME, its almost scary how real it is. Ive learned one thing and its not having unprotected sex, but aside from that the movie is freakin great. It represents almost any teenager in the world I think. Now im gonna go and get myself a blunt, cyall in hell ;-P

HOLLAND IS THA SHIT!!!

nake (Email address withheld) writes:

this film is dope, i'm torn between thinking its cool or tragic either way casper is a god

Pork! (Email address withheld) writes:

I have to agree with EVERYONE ON HERE, that it is one of the most naturalistic films ever made, it is excellent, the directing is brillant, it couldnt get any better, i think the end just blows you away, does anyone wanna see a seconf movie?!

* i know it would never beat the first one, but larry clark could still try*

alex (Email address withheld) writes:

this movie is incredible. the kids in this movie are so cool. i smoke a lot of weed and drink a lot but not nearly as much as these dudes. they give me somethin to aspire to. they realize that livin in the moment and fuck the future is the only way to go.

Jessy (Email address withheld) writes:

Seeing the movie again, from a sociological standpoint, I found it it to be quite accurate of our youth and their train of thought. However, as I read the comments posted after the intial film critic, I am somewhat disturbed and saddened to think that these young adults view Casper as a "God" or Telly as a hero. There is nothing heroic or godly about stealing, pissing on the streets, or devirginizing virgins that have or will contract AIDS. Clark's characters in "KIDS" should be more of an eyeopener for our youth than just a praisal effort.

chloe (Email address withheld) writes:

Like others who have commented on this page, I too find it disturbing that so many of you see Telly and Casper as heroes. I think you probably need to watch the film again and look at yourselves Unless i'm completly on the wrong track and it's heroic to take someones virginity, give them HIV, steal and waste your lives on pot.

Cmoore (Email address withheld) writes:

This is a truely awsome film, I watched it a few years ago, though I'm from the countryside in England, and the film was based in NY, it was still very like my life, and the film was just incredible, mind you, in reply to Malk - I had very good parents, and so did all my friends, yet we all enjoy the exploits of many drugs, sex and generally going crazy still to date, and none of my friends have died!

just another moralizer (Email address withheld) writes:

There are some seriously sad people out there. i think half the people who write these reviews are those who have led overly sheltered lives and fancy themselves as the next Casper, good-looking, hard, skateboarding, weed-smoking "cool guy" who's maybe a little evil to boot. but you're not and thank your lucky stars that you may just live to see your 30th birthday. alternatively, if you really are safe as casper then you're fucked and i hope you see the cool side of cannabis-induced dementia, aids-induced hives all over your body and that little conscience thing which kicks in a bit later on. i really have seen this shit and i really have had to watch some great friends wither away to nothing. sorry for the lecture, who am i to lecture you? but learn from "Kids", don't aspire to it.

Phillip (Email address withheld) writes:

Kids is a shocking and slightly disturbing look at 24 hours with teenagers in the US. Although it does shock for the sake of shocking (Jennie getting raped) it does deliver some very strong underlying messages.

I also find the fact that people look up to Telly and Casper very disturbing......

Dan (dramos62@st.lawu.edu) writes:

"KIDS" is a great film. It is 2003 and I am a senior at St. Lawrence University. Today July 19 is the first time I have ever seen the film Kids and it is amazing. I felt the movie as a replay of my life. Throughout the film, I replaced the characters with people from my own experience. The movie attacked my inner being and brought me back to the days if high school. I love this film. Later

Chris (Email address withheld) writes:

There is only one more thing that is more disturbing then the film. The poeple that look at to the like's of Telly. It sickens me that these people think Telly is "cool". Well he's not. People like Telly will be lucky to live to 30 and if they do they will either be on the street's or still living at home with their mums. If one thing this film should shock not make other aspire to the actors.

Awriter2b (Email address withheld) writes:

From a (future) writer's point of view:

This movie takes place within 24 hours. That is difficult because you have to develop the story and characters so the audience will "feel" or at least understand the characters. This movie is able to do just that and the above reviews seem to prove that. This movie is disturbing and certainly each character reminds us of someone we know or ourselves.

Charlotte (madbadnaughty@hotmail.com) writes:

I think that this film is artistic genius. People who are coming on here and goin on about people looking up to telly and casper are over reacting.

People are allowed to have their own veiws and these guys are 2 pretty strong characters. Amazing film with amazing messages. Peace

Pippa (platinumcocoahearts@hotmail.com) writes:

ya know wot i'm doing this film 4 my english language A level coursework and although I've had 2 sit there and transcribe certain scenes 4 hrs I still think it is 1 of the most accurate portrayals of the way kids speak and interact - i know that's not wot strikes most ppl, it's their actions not their words that get focussed on, but back me up here, kids, DO speak like that, don't they?!!!

.....it's so sad wen kids (like telly) don't realise the devastating consequences of their own actions...

kayels (Email address withheld) writes:

it was an amazing film, its not just NY and america where the kids are like that, im from sunny england and the guys in that film are just like me and my mates, we get drunk, we get high, we do dumb stuff for the hell of it. i could relate to it alot, but the film really made me think hard. wen you are doin these things you think its funny or cool, but really its not. the ending was sick, so good, it just jumps up and smacks you in the face HARD!!! its a real eye opener.

best film in ages

lil' (Email address withheld) writes:

Here in europe it is the same shit as in NY. No matter where you live you're still one of the KIDS....

Simon (Email address withheld) writes:

Kids was good and all, but never have I been so infuriated by two main characters in a film, I found the film extremely difficult to watch whenever Telly or Casper were on the screen, they are the sort of people I despise, I was quite relieved to learn of Telly's infection, and then to make things even better, Casper bones that HIV'd up bitch and pretty much guarantees his place in hell too. Quality end there.

angelfire (Email address withheld) writes:

I have just seen the film...n all I have to say is indeed.."what the f** happened ?????".

In my view, what is depicted in this film, I would say...is SERIOUSLY DISTERBING!! OUTTA CONTROL!! SERIOUSLY SAD!! and TOTALLY DEVESTATING!!. The guy's on here are NOT COOL. This is a terrible state of affairs.

If this is what Youth of today are on...then God help Humanity....cos there will be no one....cos everyone will be wiped out by AIDS!!. That is the end of the story's senario folks....so it's time for 'HELLO??? ANYBODY OUT THERE?? TIME TO WAKE UP EHH??"

Michelle (Email address withheld) writes:

I love the story and it does reflect teenagers lifes and stuff *I would know - No i dont have aids though* Its what we do drink take drugs and have sex (Well some of us) And can also have a big inpact on the way we act,In a benificial way, 'Cause we dont want aids!, But yeah, I Love the film very much! Think it's Rad, the character casper is awesome!

Tori (Email address withheld) writes:

I think this is the only film that takes a true look at teenagers today. Its so true and hope other teenages see it so they no what they'l most probably end up like if you hang around with the wrong ppl, I'm 15 and have already gone down that road and it's actually quit shit, u end up gettin busted by pigs(police) all da time, then ya mum an dad find out an then ya never aloud friend 4 the rest of ur life.its a great film, and hope most of ppl see the serious side of it, laters

Greg (yeah) writes:

Guys the movie is a deterrant.

Whats the matter with you people. It was intended to be an encouragement, and its sad that it relates to you all.

A Nonymous (withheld@withheld.com) writes:

Im gunna have to agree with everyone so far that kids is blatently unaffraid to tell it like it is, the stu[pid mistakes made when guys are caught up in hormones, and the nievity in young girls wanting to be loved. Some comments have shocked me with people seemingly pround to emmulate characters from the film, where the tragedy is that the only sensible charater (jenny) is the one who gets the raw deal. But anyway we must learn from the mistakes so obviously thrown in our faces in this film..its the only way to have a good standard of life.

Mrs. Satan, just another "KID" (Email address withheld) writes:

It's 2005, a whole 10 years after this movie was first released but it didnt seem outdated much at all. KIds are still the same way these days for the most part.

Telly is obnoxious, I dont know how he got all those girls. He's not cute, waay too skinny and talks like hes got cotton stuffed in his cheeks. Casper? He's hot as fuck.

I live in Suburbia and I can tell you that my friends and I would be living just like them if we didnt have our parents around like them.

Liam (Email address withheld) writes:

Dude, wtf? You know what scares me MOST about this movie? The fact that some of you people thought Telly and Casper were "great", "funny", and "just like" you. Just like you? Do you rape drunk girls, then? Do you screw young virgin girls while they cry for the thrill of it? Do you beat people nearly to death with skateboards for no reason because you felt like it? Because that's what Telly and Casper did. And that's NOT funny or cool. Get a fucking HOLD of yourselves! If you ARE like that, I hope you get hit by a bus. We really need less of you people.

Great movie. Shocking, frightening, but real. I know teenagers who make stupid decisions like this every day. After all, I'm a teenager myself of 17. I see this stuff happening around me all the time - experienced it, even. I've been to parties like that. For a while, I even smoked pot like a fiend. I'm so glad I got out of it. Sure, it seemed fun being drunk and stoned...but then I realized I was killing myself. Sound like some of you need to come to the same realization.
