The relationship between movies and computer games has become ever more symbiotic. With expanding technology ensuring that games are closer to movies than ever before, its unsurprising that Hollywood has taken notice. From films such as Paul Anderson's own Mortal Kombat (1995) to the – truly abysmal – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), the computer game has been ripe for adaptation. Most of these have attempted to take the thin plots afforded by such games and spin them out into something bigger and better than their origins. And –truth be told- all have failed. What makes Resident Evil so interesting is in its conviction not to convert a computer game into Hollywood material. Instead, it goes for the other way round. Indeed, the film stays so rigidly close to its source material that you spend half the time wondering where the joypad is.

A plot summary would be rather useless as really all that happens is that Milla Jovovich and a variety of cannon fodder supporting players fight, shoot and blow up zombies and other nasty things for 85 minutes solid. With a thumping hard rock soundtrack and requisite shots of Jovovich looking sexy, the film is firmly aimed at those with Pamela Anderson posters plastered over their bedroom wall.

From all this, Resident Evil sounds like the worst film in the world. Surprisingly, it isn't. Simply put, its utter lack of pretension is breathtaking. Many of the most cack-handed blockbusters of the past few years (Battlefield: Earth [2000], I'm looking at you) have been dreadful because of their desperate attempts to create a meaningful, literate story. The resulting awful dialogue and ridiculous plot points get them laughed off the screen. Anderson has found a simple way of eliminating this: get rid of plot altogether (leaving in only the stuff that would get you from one scene to the other) in favour of pure visceral thrills. And certainly this film does deliver: in particular a corridor sequence that produces one of the best screen deaths in many a year, or the killer dogs that terrorise the group. Dumb? You bet. But it pretends to be nothing more.

This is not to say that Resident Evil is a good film by any stretch of the imagination. After all, this year's crop of blockbusters (Spider-Man, Minority Report, etc) has shown us that these kind of films can be both big and clever. But it is the most striking representation of how pure visceral thrills are becoming, more than ever before, big business. Certainly, Resident Evil is much fun at points. But Hollywood should realise that a little intelligence can often make things go a lot further.

I recently saw Resident Evil, and I thought it was a great film that was highly underrated. Even though the storyline is complex, that can be solved by watching it 2 or 3 times.

Tyler (big_wink69@yahoo.com) writes:

i liked the movie alot and i was wondering if anybody new of a pal anderson official site or of some way i could get in touch with him i have a question i would like to ask him so if anybody does email me

Adam (xirxcis@hotmail.com) writes:

This was one of the most terrible movies I've seen all year, and you would have to be a complete moron, 5 years old, or sarcastic to say something like "the storyline is complex" here. There isn't any storyline. I looks like they scrapped together a bunch of bulls***, trite hollywood special effects, branded it, and targeted hormonally imbalanced teenagers with more money to burn than common sense. What really steams me, though, is that such a hack, amiture director like Anderson is now going to be allowed to rape both the Alien and Preditor franchises simultaniously directing the upcoming Alien vs Preditor movie. Disgusting. There are certain people who, for reasons of preserving at least some of the mystique and imagination of filmmaking, should be blacklisted from the industry, and Anderson is one of those.

miguel tipacti (encumbramientodelaperfeccion@latinmail.com) writes:

i have a great surprise when i see this movie ,it's a good film about a video game ,maybe the best taken a game.

it's full action and the images are cool.

lastly it's very difficult to find a regular-good film and resident evil destroy all this dudes!!!

Master Assassin 220 (masterassassin_220@hotmail.com) writes:

From start to finish i thought it was well scripted and as a whole, a bloody good film. Can't say the film was complex but it was impressive none the less.

i was disappointed with the licker. it was the only one that scared the crap out of me in the second game and in the film it deserves much more that a red thing that doesn't sound anything like the one in the game, that mutates into something that looks like a skinned dog?

yes.....

but I will agree that its the best game-to-film conversion.

mario brothers? please.

mortal combat? what a load of **** on a plate.

lets hope AVP the film will be a great success

Bad boy (residentevilisapileofwank@hotmail.com) writes:

This film is bollocks. It is too stylized, too cliche and ultimately, just too crap. Why do people love such immature, badly made nonsense. Why are directors like Paul Anderson still in a job? I was so dissapointed.

Jim Smith (jimsmith@hotmail.com) writes:

Resident Evil has about as much panache as the kamera.co.uk website logo.

Travis Roa (travisroa893@hotmail.com) writes:

I wasn't all to impressed with the Resident Evil Movie. I'm a dedicated fan to the game and I was disappointed to see that there wasnt even a mention of the Bad A** "Hunters" or the Tyrant. Also Master Assasin was right about his comments towards the Licker, it was terrible, they should have kept it as a standard monster not a mutating freak like it was.

I have heard rumors of a sequel, the NEMESIS movie, although i have found very limited information about the movie so if anyone has any info about the NEMESIS movie please email me with what you know. I am totally interested in the possibility of the movie so someone email me if u know somethin

Andrew Johnston (2ajohnston@uddingston.s-lanark.sch.uk) writes:

I have to disagree with most of the people i thought resident evil was a brilliant movie. Even though i thought that the stroy would be about the mansion in the arklay forests i was still impressed with the storyline and characters. It wasnt until after id watched the film that i realised that the film was based before the first resident evil game i just thought that it was a whole new storyline but i realised it wasnt because at the end Matt turned into what seemed likke the "NEMESIS".

Daniel Swiss (Collswiss@aol.com) writes:

I am thank ful that I am not the only one that Loves this movie

I rented it when it came out and LOVED it :D

I thought it was suspenseful and at times scary. IT took me two tries to understand the complex plot but I am glad I did :)

I cant understand why people dont think this film is scary and suspenseful.

Paul Anderson works well with the special effects and timing and did a wonderful job. COme on when the lady gets her head caught in the elevator door and the elevator door goes up and down real fast. That was cool :D

This film uses Timing for shocks better than any other movie I can remember. At least it is a Contender :D

Raz (razwell@hotmail.com) writes:

I can't beleive some of these comments.

I don't know how Anyone who's really played resident evil can find this film anything but disappointing.

Frankley, it was pure garbage. It had no style, very bad special effects, no cast except a make up model, and one of the worst jobs of directing I've ever seen. I was very disappointed, I felt like I was watching a crossover between night of the living dead and the matrix, I mean come on!! This movie was a joke! The zombies looked like people picked off the street and dressed with a 5 minute make up job.

look at Spiderman, is was sucha success because they kept 90% of everything the same as the comic. They didn't do that with this movie.

People who end up giving this movie good reviews are the reason movie quality has dropped so much since the 80's. I'm only 21 and i can appreciate how well done movies like Predator and Aliens were, and none of these newer over-done-wth-special -effect-and-no-story movies will ever come close.

My advice would have been to get someone like Cameron or

Mcteirnon(spelling?) to do AVP, not this Anderson guy, he's got no Style in his movies,

It's too bad avp is doomed.

Noes (citydude_262yahoo.com) writes:

im a fan of the resident evil franchise and when i saw resident evil on the big screen i was disappointed. it had a weak plot, had nothing to do with the original story like in the game, it wasent scary like the game. that pist me off the most that it wasnot scary. the zombies were not decaid enough. unlike in the game the zombies skin were almost gone exposing most of the skull. whats wrong with the movie being like the game GIVE THE R.E. FANS AND THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!! they want to see the movie like the game with the masion, the horride creatures, and the creepy atmoshpere that the game provided.

chris cameron (Email address withheld) writes:

from someone who has played and completed just about all the games i thought the film was really good but theres one thing i cant wait to see the second one the ending was so gripping there HAD to be anotherone getting made i cant wait

If you want a film to challenge your intellect, watch Ghandi or something. This film did exactly what it said on the tin, no more, no less. And as far as slagging off the director, I would like to see your efforts. At least the cast didn't have to turn on the spot to change direction, bump into walls every time the camera angle changed and walk off screen all the bloody time. Tee hee

This movie was one of the most worst movies i ever did see.I found it highly crapulant.Me being a fan of the video games for years i could have written a better script than that. This movie sucks more ass than a little bit, hardly nobody from the video game was on it,and i personally want to kill everybody that had anything to do with this piece of shit! However, the only thing hot about this movie was Milla Jovovich.Man i look at her like Homer Simpson looks at porkchops,I be like umm,Milla....Haaaaaauuuuuuuugggggghhh!!!

Anyway, long story short this movie was fucking WACK!!!!!! thank you.

MA-121 Hunter (sparkshot@msn.com) writes:

First of all I'm a Resident Evil Geek, I admit it, I got a chronology printed off gamespot.com and look at it alot.

The film? Thought it was very entertaining as a whole and well directed, [('HOWEVER')] The director needs to be left in a room full of ma-39 Cerberus. Why? because he has altered the storyline to a load of simplified tripe, contradicted almost all of the TRUE things and basicaly done his own thing and ruined resident evil as we know it. Example: Mansion-it should be S.T.A.R.S team investigating. So every time I watch this I can't enjoy it fully 'cos I know Its just...well...WRONG. and alice 'who the f**k is alice!!'

the next film is going to mess up as well 'cos they are mixing original characters with fake ones... oh dear.

If anybody agrees with me or wants to talk resident evil then I will be very Happy!

I personal thought the film was ok i was a bit dissapointed in some parts it could of been more scary and gripping it took me a while to understand the plot as i have never seen the game before i hope they make a sequel i wasn't sure what was going on at the end

Well, this movie is a complete mess, it doesnt make any sense according with the game, Im very disappointed with it. Hope someone make another resident evil movie based on the game, not on this garbage. Where on world have they placed Tyrant? Wht is the leaker in the "mansion"? Well, this movie is shite.

All you guys that are R.E. (game) fans and hated the movie... what dumba**es. It didnt follow the story close enough, it didnt do this, it didnt do that.

Im a film major and have loved the R.E. series since the first game.

1. great action

2. great soundtrack

3. good suspense

4. good zombies (what the hell was the comment about seeing the zombies skulls??? did you play the game at all? maybe after you shot the head off you saw some skull.

5. poor licker.

6. great plot (and no it doesnt have to be like the game - plus the comment by one of you was right, this was suposed to be prior to the first game). and what the hell. its a zombie movie! what kind of plot do you want?!?!

Anyways. It was a great movie. truely under-rated.

btw... i just saw part 2. it was friggin awsome.

Scott P. [P is for Proactive] (Email address withheld) writes:

Having wanted for a sci-fi action blockbuster of exciting nature, I willingly tucked into Mr Anderson's adaption of, to be fair, what was an average game. I liked Resident Evil [Film] to a surprising length, and although it's no classic, it's got excitement and thrills that it promises, although in my mind their wasn't enough gunfights. The fact that it's enjoyable is no real surprise, it's a movie, not a film, thus it's about the entertainment value and not plot, character development and evolving stories, which is a breath of fresh air. It was also good to see a half decent film/game adaption. However, if good Adaptions is what your looking for Hollywood, here are some suggestions: Half-Life [priority], Quake, Unreal, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Deus Ex.

P.S: One thing not clear: Are 2 of the marines called Baker and Caplain, and of their are, are they identical twins?

andi tipping (anditipping@hotmail.com) writes:

i enjoyed the 2nd movie more than the first because i remember from playing every resident evil game, jill valentine, hunters and olivera. i think that if they make a third movie it should definately be made in the mansion from RE1. i think they should get rid of alice (who the f*ck is alice) and bring in chris redfield, barry burton and get val kilmer to play wesker (any remember iceman in top gun? that hair cut of val kilmer is so like weskers!!!) the thing is i am a massive fan of the RE games and i was disappointed after watching the films (a bit like i was after playing RE Breakout) i felt i was duped. the person who directed the film,Mr Anderson, has probably never even played resident evil and doesnt understand the idea behind it. if a third film is made i think that they should get fans ideas on what the film should be like

chamera (Email address withheld) writes:

ok the first film, Anderson makes very hollow films. Its not very good at all, cliches, moments that just make you cringe "your all going to die down here". This shoots resident evil fans in the head and has killed any chance of a good film being made. With a good director this would rock but no.

Resident evil 2 Apoc, thank god Anderson didn't direct, better director but oh no Anderson is in charge of script arrrrrghh. No wonder no Directors want to sign on for furture Res Evil movies lol.

Event Horizon is the only film i'd give him slight credit for.

The third movie is going to be called, Resident Evil Afterlife and i think Wesker is going to be in this one. However... i learned a lesson watching any movie based on a videogame...there all going to suck.

JestaDaJuggalo (Email address withheld) writes:

haha, that's some funny shit.. here it is.. Resident evil has NEVER been just about the zombies... it's about survival and it's about surviving in a corrupt world corrupted by chain reactions and trigger effects of bio and chemical testing.... Paully boy clearly hasn't played the game... or at least not enough to be of any significance.. I am not so disappointed that it's another story what really gets to me is the fact that this simple side story just has to be the core of resident evil.. I could understand some survivors some being civilian and some being soldiers and other kinds of people... I can understand them trying to find their way out of a dangerous place.. BUT WHY THE FUCK DO THEY HAVE TO TAKE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL FRANCHISE NAME AND REDIRECT THE WHOLE STORY FROM THE VERY BEGINNING? what the fuck? see it would have been ok.. we could have just shrugged this amateur film off our shoulders and to the side... if it had not been for the damn sequel.. of course that was a beautifully designed and even exquisite Nemesis.. but why the hell did it have to be matt? why did it have to be tied in? that's just bullshit.. you could put carlos in... and maybe get away with that but sticking jill in there is just moronic and degrading to all Resident Evil survivors this is utter bullshit and I will watch and buy RE 3

for sure.. I'll keep all the movies.. but mark my words Resident Evil will have its revenge and its comeback... and there you have it from the not-so-funny Jester himself.. haha just you wait.. you'll see

John (johncheats@hotmail.com) writes:

My advice to the guys/girls who takes movies too seriously.. GET A FREAKING LIFE!

This is one hell of a good movie.

And okay.. it's not the original game storyline, but does it realy have to be the same? I am a huge fan of Resident Evil the games AND the movies. I played Resident Evil 1,2,3 and Outbreak. Loved all of them! I watched Resident Evil and Resident Evil : Apocalypse. Loved both of them too.

The next RE movie will be called : Resident Evil - Afterlife and will be released in 2006. If everything goes allright.

Anyways.. I'm looking forward to see this new RE movie. At least I let my fantasy go when i'm watching a movie... THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE! You'll have to try that too..Stop critisizing, let your fantasy go next time.

Gavin McCully (gavinmac3uk@hotmail.co.uk) writes:

I love the films, but wouldn't be great if they called one RESIDENT EVIL:THE BEGINNING. This should be based on the first game with Chris, Barry, Jill and Wesker.

scott nemisis (evil_nemisis@hotmail.co.uk) writes:

everybody who says resident evil movie1 and 2 is crap must have mental issues. they are the best movies i have seen in a long time, i love em. the story has changed, but they have done it in a good way, the way they have apated Alice is very good the makers of the movie deserve some credit!! oh by the way Alice is so, fit dont you think. i think they should make loads of resident evil films. respect to all the makers PEACE!!! AND ALL THE FANS

Weapon-01 (Email address withheld) writes:

Dear Paul WS Anderson, here's a "small" list of how you fucked "Res Evil Apoc"

:Nicholi is older, bigger, badder, and trying to kill everyone.

:Carlos is younger, smaller, full of it, and doesn't have twin D-eagles.

:Who the hell is Yuri?

:Where's Michial?

:Who's LJ?

:Nemeses is purely a hell bent killing machine.

:Why are the STARS members still alive at the bowling alley?

:Jill kills Nemeses.

:Hunters... where are they?

:Jill is more heartful & sensitve (but no less skilled)

:Since when does Res-evil charicters kill normal people?

:Graveyard sceane... where's the mega-worm?

:Where are the embarressing one-liners?

:He's a coward sure but, where's Brad?

:Dosen't Res-evil 2&3 occur during late September-early October, Hmmmm? A 5 day period.

:Not enough Shotgun action.

:Barry pilots is the helocopter to save Jill & friends.

:The President orders the Nuke on Raccoon City, not Umbrella.

:Zombies/Zombie-violence were nowhere near gory enough to meet "THE" standared.

:And last, but not least, why didn't you hire somebody more competent to direct?

like Robert Rodriguez?

Well thanks for reading this comment/rant, Mr.Anderson (pulls out a black Desert Eagle)

To all the "true" Resident Evil Fans out there, add to the list if ya know anything else, and Stay Scared!

experiment 019 (Email address withheld) writes:

Okay... like how the hell did Nemesis lose a fight to Alice? And who the fuck is she anyway? Why did'nt Nemesis kill MIke Epps's character( whoever the hell he played that was not in the game anyway.) Drop your weapons or not he would have still killed you. Nemesis has a "JASON VORHEES" type of mentality, and just like Jason he goes after a specific type of person but won't hesitate to kill anybody that gets in his way. Jason kills teenagers..and other humans, Nemesis kills S.T.A.R.S. members..and other humans. GET THE POINT? Where was the Tyrant? The giant spiders? Carlos, military strongman? HA!! Carlos was a BITCH!! Jill had to slap the Bajesus out of him just so he can "MAN UP". Nemesis looked kind of slow in the movie, well piss on that!! In the videogame he was fast! He damn near did zero to 30 in 1 second....seriously! Rocket Launcher was to small, the Gatlin gun was cool. Ashford family was wrong. Other S.T.A.R.S members were not in the city except for Brad, Jill, and Barry Burton to the rescue. Nemesis could not be controlled in the game. Umbrella unleashes each B.O.W. from helicopter or a good distance far away fom themselves...there called BIO-WEAPONS not bio buddies!! I could go on and on but i probably got to many idiots mad at me already.

The movie in my opinion was horrible. You made up so much stuff it basically destroyed it and was no longer resident evil. It was now an Action movie instead of A horror story. When the movie resident evil was first released my first thought was " yes the mansion this is going to be the greatest movie ever." Then i saw it and was disapointed. If you are going to make a resident evil movei please i ask you please play the games fully before you start on it. Also Alice was a horrible plot character to fit into the movie. Giving her sortof Matrix abilities was horrible on your part. Please next time you try and make a Resident evil movei make a pole on how the movie should be played out.
