(30/03/07) – Kamera.co.uk has branched out into book publishing, which will see a series of elegantly presented titles covering a wide array of topics of interest to film fans. The first title to come out is Brian J. Robb’s survey of Silent Cinema, which talks in detail about the beginnings of the technological development of cinema, the advent of the art form, the first directors and pioneers, the creation of the star system, the scandals, the classics, international silent cinema and the introduction of sound. It is a clearly structured guide for the initiated and the novice alike.

To create an illustration of the history told in the book, Silent Cinema includes a region-free DVD called Sunrise Silent’s Silent Cinema Stars, a three-hour compilation of excerpts from films such as Son of the Sheik, Phantom of the Opera, The Perils of Pauline, Salome and Orphans of the Storm, including performances by early stars like Mary Pickford, Harold Lloyd, Lon Chaney, Louise Brooks, Mabel Normand, John Barrymore, Clara Bow, Buster Keaton, Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo.
